At first glance, you might think I'm just slapping colour down, blowing it about a bit, and adding some funky patterns. Well, you're not entirely wrong! I hope my paintings give a feeling of freedom and energy. The real trick is making the art feel effortless while creating an accurate, lifelike representation of my subject.
Underneath all those splashes and patterns is the framework of a real living thing. I take my time, building up layers to ensure these animals are worth every penny. Whether it's a dog portrait or a piece of highland cow art, it is a careful balance of chaos and control.
So, what are the five magic ingredients to my animal artwork?
I'm often asked how I bring so much character into my work. I've narrowed it down to five key elements that are essential to my process.
It’s all in the eyes. I am absolutely obsessed with painting the eyes. It is my favourite part because it’s where we connect with the soul of the animal. It’s where I bring the subject to life and where you, my lovely customers, fall in love.
Splash & Blow! The splashes are my disruptors. I love letting go of control, blowing the paint across the wall art canvas, and reacting to what happens. It adds a layer of spontaneity and energy that you can't plan.
A blast of colour! You wouldn't be here if you didn't have a love for colour. I adore playing with bright combinations and splashes of neon. Making adventurous colour choices work is a fine balance, but it's what makes a piece of wall art jump off the wall.
Geometric Wizardry. These shapes are all painted by hand and evolve with the artwork. It’s often the last special geometric shape that brings the whole piece of animal art together.
Intrinsic Energy. Being an artist is about finding your own voice. You have to be fully in the moment to allow your energy to flow and your instincts to take over. This is what gives each piece of animal art it’s unique spirit.
