Is Canvas Wall Art Better Than Prints for Long-Term Quality?

wall art | dog painting

This is one of those questions I get asked a lot - is canvas wall art actually better than prints when it comes to long-term quality?

And the honest answer is… well, it depends what you’re looking for.

What is Canvas Wall Art? The Timeless Favourite

Canvas wall art has a lovely, classic feel about it.  There’s a richness in the texture of canvas that makes artwork feel alive in your space. It feels closer to the original painting, like you’ve got a piece of the studio right there in your living room.

Canvas is also pretty sturdy. With proper care - no direct sunlight, no damp walls, and maybe not in the kitchen above the kettle - a good quality piece of canvas wall art will last for decades. If you’re after that gallery-style look and you love the idea of something that feels alive with texture and depth, then canvas wall art is a winner.

What are Framed Wall Art Prints? The Sleek, Modern, Versatile Option

On the flip side, framed wall art prints bring a clean, modern vibe. A crisp frame around a gorgeously printed piece of animal art can really elevate a room. They’re also versatile - you can mix and match sizes, swap them around, and even change the frame later if you fancy a different style.

Quality prints these days are brilliant. We’re not talking about those flimsy posters from your teenage bedroom - my professional framed wall art prints are created with archival inks and high-grade paper, which means the colours stay bold and vibrant for years. And framed wall art also has the added bonus of protection - naturally the glass or acrylic front keeps out dust, sticky fingers, and the occasional rogue paw swipe (I see you, cat owners).

So, Which Is “Better”: Canvas Wall Art or Prints?

Here’s the truth: it’s not really about one being “better” than the other. It’s about what you want from your artwork.

If you want something that feels textured, tactile and perhaps a little closer to the original? Go for canvas wall art.

If you prefer a sleek, modern finish that’s easy to swap around and feels polished? Then framed wall art prints are perfect.

Obsessed with your dog’s ears, eyes, or slightly-too-long tongue? (Aren’t we all?) Then a custom dog portrait works beautifully on either wall art canvas or a framed wall art print - it’s all down to your style. To find out more about my animal art commissions - click here.

My Take as an Artist

Personally, I love both. When I create an original painting, the layers of paint on wall art canvas feel so alive, so full of energy. But when I see one of my designs transformed into framed wall art, there’s something really crisp and professional about it that makes me want to redecorate my own walls.

The most important thing is that your art brings you joy. Whether it’s a beautiful, bold highland cow on wall art canvas, or a colourful framed dog portrait brightening up your hallway, the right piece of wall art should make you smile every time you walk past it.

That, to me, is what long-term quality really means. And while you’re here, be sure to check out my collection of wall art canvases and framed wall art prints.
